About Dr. Schwartz
Dr. Schwartz is an experienced functional medicine doctor and chiropractic physician who has over 30 years of training, practice experience and teaching experience. He has advanced training and certifications including: AFMC- Advanced Functional Medicine Clinician, DACNB- Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Neurologists, FABVR- Fellow of the American Board of Vestibular Rehabilitation. He is also certified as ReCODE 2.0 practitioner, which is the first method to demonstrate improvement and in some cases reversal of cognitive decline/ Alzheimer's dementia.
Dr. Schwartz sees the human body as an integrated system. This is the best way to treat most chronic problems. He has an in-depth working knowledge of all body systems. This has been obtained through daily study and patient experience obtained over the past 30 years in neurology, endocrinology, immunology, genetics, hematology, orthopedics, pulmonology, gastroenterology and metabolism, and the vascular aspect of the cardiovascular system. All these systems are connected. As you read through the pages on this website you will begin to understand the connections between these systems. Hormones including your thyroid, the brain, the microbiome, and the immune system are generating signaling molecules which control the function of your organ systems in an integrated manner.
He works with Functional Medicine which is also called Upstream Medicine. This is medicine that utilizes standard medical diagnostic techniques including physical exams, laboratory testing, and medical imaging. Functional medicine looks for the root cause of disease and utilizes a detailed application of diet, supplementation, sleep, exercise, and stress reduction as the basis of treatment. When functional medicine is combined with genetic testing it becomes Precision Medicine.
Some patients require medicine that is called downstream medicine and requires the use of pharmaceuticals. The downstream term is not meant to have a negative connotation. It simply means that some people require pharmaceuticals for their healing. This does not preclude them, however, from being supported by natural healing strategies that can benefit their health.
Functional Medicine/Upstream Medicine/Precision Medicine is a work of both science and art. Dr. Schwartz takes a biopsychosocial approach to all medical problems. It is important to understand the person and the psychological and social constraints that impede their healing. Then we can motivate them and teach them to take care of themselves. We call this achieving a high degree of healthcare self-efficacy. This is difficult to do but is very important. All the knowledge in the world will not be worth much if you do not know how to apply it effectively to reach your healthcare goals.
So, if you would please think about this concept: There are 168 hours in 1 week. If you spend 2 hours with Dr. Schwartz in 1 week you still have 166 hours on your own to care for yourself. That time matters. The word doctor means teacher in Latin and Dr. Schwartz takes that interpretation very seriously. When we combine the wonderful technology and discoveries that modern medicine has to offer with a cooperative effort between a doctor and knowledgeable engaged patient, you have a very powerful healing combination.
Please take the time to read through the pages on this website. You will learn a lot about functional medicine, upstream medicine, and precision medicine and how they can be applied to your individual health needs.
